Partial or complete injuries to peripheral nerves can cause pain downstream from the site of the injury, even in areas that are numb. This is a condition called “deafferentation pain” and is one of the causes of phantom limb pain. Nerve injury pain can be successfully treated using the same techniques as those used for neuropathic pain.
